I love Mr Warhol and I'm not ashamed to say it

www.thelowry.com

Last Saturday morning began with me taking myself off (on the fabulous new Metrolink line) from Chorlton to The Lowry at Salford Quays to see the ‘Warhol & The Diva’ exhibition running until September.

I’d just like to make it clear that I, in no uncertain terms, love Andy Warhol, I am completely 100% biased in this post, and unashamedly so.

It’s hard to pinpoint the time that I first became interested in Warhol’s work, having been introduced to art by the standards such as Da Vinci and Turner (both of whom I am still in awe of). I became vaguely aware of him through my teenage years, and, the more I learnt, the more I loved. From his oddly introverted manner (which I have tried desperately to affect at various points throughout my life) to his relationships with people who I class as my 20th century heroes; John Lennon, Yoko Ono, David Bowie and Lou Reed to name but a few. My love for Andy Warhol was meant to be, it always just seemed to fit.

Even now in 2011 at the age of 28, some 24 years after Warhol’s untimely death, I find myself day dreaming, in my quieter moments, about visiting The Factory (Warhol’s sprawling New York studio) and hanging out with Andy, Edie Sedgwick et al. Or frequenting Studio 54 in the 1970’s, a real hanger on, trying to get my very own 15 minutes.

So it was with relish I skipped off to enjoy my solo morning, having learnt early in our relationship that the hubster and art galleries don’t mix. Ok, I’m doing hubster a disservice, he is more than willing to take me along to galleries (he even took me to one on our first date, although I suspect an ulterior motive there), it is more that my expectations of him are far too high. I expect him to say something deeply profound and moving about the art work, or just to shut up! No way was I taking him to an exhibition of my dear love Andy Warhol only to hear “I don’t get it”, “that’s not art” or, worst of all, “Are we going soon?”

There is a fabulous flow to the setup of this exhibition space. ‘Warhol & The Diva’ sits in the middle of the permanent Lowry displays in the gallery. The exhibition organisers seem to have purposefully played on the clear juxtaposition between the two worlds of Lowry and Warhol. As you walk through the portrait works of LS Lowry, beautifully drawn and painted but subtle and low-key in colouration, you are suddenly met with a lurid screen print of Elizabeth Taylor against a black wall upon which is the quote from Warhol; “It would be very glamorous to be reincarnated as a great big ring on Liz Taylor's finger”. And just like that, you’re in another world.
Liza Minnelli, 1977
Collection of the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh

I’m not in the business of writing exhibition critiques or reviews so I will leave it there urging any Warhol fans to see this exhibition. However you have experienced Warhol’s work, however familiar the screen prints and soup cans are, this exhibition brings something new and (almost) unexpected, and will leave you viewing the man himself in a different and fabulous light.

New job and no Rapture

Funny old week this week.

I've been casually perusing job websites for a while, going to a couple of interviews that I wasn't necessarily bothered about getting etc., I always tend to this when I have itchy feet in my current role. And boy have my feet itched for a while!

So, very end of last week I received a call from a recruitment agency that I have never registered with, about a job I have never applied for! Anyway, they got my details from an online job forum and thought I may be interested in the job. Sure was!

The role was working for Bench. in Manchester. I had an interview for them 2.5 years ago, got past the initial interview, and fell at the final stage, was absolutely gutted!

Anyway, I got a call on Friday and they loved me! I'll start working there mid June. So over the course of a week, I've gone from casually at best checking job websites to getting a new job and handing my notice in! Got a bit upset on Friday as I will miss my friends where I work now, but I'm starting to get excited!

On the wedding front, we've made quite a fair bit of progress...due in no small part that I have realised just how many tutorials you can find on You Tube! Will now be making the centrepieces and the bouquets, drawing the line at the wedding dress and cake!

I've found an amazing dress on Etsy and have ordered it to be made for me! Which has now spurred me on to get to goal because I've promised final measurements in August! (on a side note I now weigh the least I have done since starting Weight Watchers, so I'm well on the way!).

I am very scared about leaving the dress making to someone in the US who I have never met and not seeing the dress until it's here and made! (I had a dream the other night that the dress arrived and she'd made it in black and white patterned fabric! - eeeeek). But, I think it's what I'm going to have to do to get the perfect vintage style dress for me.

No rapture last night either, so that's good - although I haven't been outside yet so I'm half expecting a scene similar to Beetlejuice when they try to leave the house

We'll find out in a bit - I need to go out and buy toothpaste!

So, all in all, I'm very happy in my life at the moment. I'm not sure if it's a British thing but I'm expecting something to go wrong! Must repeat the mantra 'enjoy it now, enjoy it now'.

Plans March on Apace

Quick update on the weight loss before I go on, have lost 5.5lbs in the past 2 weeks, so looks like the tablets have settled down a bit – splendid.

Having said that, as I’m writing this my belly is bulging, obviously not because I’ve fallen off the wagon (see previous sentence!), because hubster and I have been sampling some wedding cakes today! Hurrah.

What a fab day it’s been, glorious weather, mini road trip down to Shropshire (little pun there as we travelled in the mini) and two very productive meetings – if you can call them that, more like chatting with copious amounts of tea and cake!
First meeting was at Queenies Cupcakery in Ironbridge www.queeniescupcakery.co.uk , we met up with Leanne, the wedding co-ordinator in the beautiful vintage and chintzy décor of Queenies. We were given tea served in a vintage tea pot and a selection of mini cupcakes to sample for the flavours! VERY me, not so much the hubster, although it has to be said, he very much enjoyed the free cakes! It was great; we’ve chosen to have a mix of flavours seeing as we’re looking at purchasing around 120 cakes! Had the quote done and it was very pleasing indeed!

So, after Queenies, we waddled back to the car feeling full to the brim to go and meet Bethan of Haywood Jones Photography www.haywoodjonesphotography.co.uk . I’ve seen Bethans work on www.rocknrollbride.com and have spoken to her a few times via email, was super excited because she sounded lovely via email. I certainly wasn’t disappointed! Bethan was absolutely lovely, and showed us all sorts of styles of photos we can have, she super flexible too and very open to ideas. Can’t wait to work alongside her to get some fab wedding images done…and if she can stop hubster smiling like a gimp when he gets a camera pointed in his face then she’s a miracle worker!

People keep telling me ‘gosh, aren’t you organised?’ seeing as the wedding isn’t until 11th August 2012, but I’m really eager to get the ‘big stuff’ out of the way so that I can get on to doing the creative fun stuff! I want to keep stress to a minimum approaching the big day – it will do nothing for my complexion for Bethans photographs! Haha

So excited on the way back to Manchester – we saw a Delorean on the motorway! I’ve never actually seen one in person – am now debating the practicalities of having a Delorean as a wedding car…hmm...

Sunday 27 March 2011

Oooh I have been busy!

Everything has moved on at a fair pace since my last post all those weeks ago!

Let's start with weight loss - I'm still struggling with the thyroid issue at the moment, have lost just 0.5lbs in the past 3 weeks - having said that, it's a loss, not a gain. I am also not helping matters with the fact that I am eating like a P.I.G. at the moment. Curry, take aways, sweets etc... I just have very fleeting motivation at the moment. I am determined to get to goal (or thereabouts) for the birth of my nephew in June. It's an odd thing to aim for, but feel it's a significant milestone to work to!

On to weddingy stuff now - how exciting! I'll begin with a little story for you - Between Christmas and New Year, hubster and I visited several wedding venues in South Wales, we were set on the idea of having the wedding close to his home. We found a beautiful venue and excitedly booked the venue - our date was set! When the hotel sent through all the paperwork we found that there were a lot of shady hidden costs (paying for a minimum of 3 alcoholic drinks for EVERY guest at the reception whether they wanted them or not - including my (as will be) 1 year old nephew!). So we politely told the hotel thanks but no thanks.

Now. I absolutely love reading www.rocknrollbride.com website for alternative wedding ideas. I was looking on the site in January when I came across this http://www.rocknrollbride.com/2011/01/a-quirky-british-cupcakey-kinda-day a pictorial piece showcasing vintage dresses. These pictures are so my style and I fell in love with all the dresses. I was SHOCKED to find that not only was "Queenies" www.queeniescupcakery.co.uk, the little cupcake shop featured in the piece, in Ironbridge only 10 minutes from my mum and dad but the photographer - Bethan at Haywood Jones photography www.haywoodjonesphotography.co.uk - was based in the same town too! woohoo! This lead me on to looking at venues near there and, even though we were still set for a South Wales wedding, when I saw images of the Coalbrookdale Museum I just had to book a viewing.

We went to see the Coalbrookdale museum with my mum and dad. As you know, we initially looking at the venue with the view of booking the museum for the ceremony only and then having the reception at my mum and dad's house. When we saw the venue, we fell in love with it! and decided to have the whole sha-bang there. It just seemed to make so much more sense and was so much easier for the guests, also, it's set deep in Ironbridge Gorge and wow, talk about Ironbridge Gorge-ous surroundings! (sorry, couldn't resist that one!).

So, we'd found the perfect venue, then we wandered up into Ironbridge to "Queenies" and found the perfect cake! (we are very much planning on booking them). In April we have a meeting planned with Bethan so, fingers crossed, it'll be 3 for 3 and we'll find the perfect photographer too!

We've set the date and sent off the deposit cheque but, seeing as our previous venue fell through, hubster has told me not to make any big announcements until that cheque has cleared! (Then I will be telling all and sundry about my wedding!)

All things seem to be coming together for the initial bookings. I think the main thing I have to worry about is not bursting with excitement before the wedding! I JUST WANT TO GET MARRIED TO MY GORGEOUS MR NOW!!!!

Big Break Again...oops

Sorry! Been soooo busy recently...

So, my sinamay arrived and all I need now is a head to mould it against - of course I'm talking about a polystyrene head, not a real one...that would be madness. Can't wait! I've been doing lots of designs but, as with any business, I need money to buy initial supplies so it's getting a bit slow getting off the ground...

I've been getting really down about my weight loss (or lack of it) in the past few months - I've been lulling around the same weight since the beginning of September. My Weight Watchers group leader says "at least you know you can maintain!" but I just feel like saying "yeah, 1.5 stone too high!", I was beginning to think that I'd hit the weight I am meant to be, that's it for me, never destined to be a size 10/12! Was so pleased with a 1lb loss this week.
Oddly, it came as a great relief a few weeks ago when I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. This can explain the lack of weight loss, despite dieting. So, fingers crossed, I'll be dropping lbs again soon. It's not all bad though, I have lost 36lbs to date, which is a fair achievement. PLUS thyroid medication entitles me to free prescriptions - a-woot-tee-toot-toot!

Okey dokey, on to the wedding. We went to the vintage wedding fair in Harrogate on Sunday 27th Feb and it was fab, saw lots of beautiful vintage dresses. Unfortunately most of the beautiful dresses came with pretty ugly price tags.

It was so difficult looking at the dresses as well because hubster was with me - I felt like I couldn't point out the dresses I liked in case I gave him an idea of what kind of dress I am going to wear! Dresses aside, it was really nice to have a look at table decorations and all that boring stuff because I got an idea of what hubster likes (and shock horror, he doesn't completely hate all the things I like!). Plus we finished off our day in Harrogate with cream tea at Betty's tearoom which was fab - I was pretending to be posh while hubster repeatedly licked his knife in order to piss me off.

We've got a tour of the Coalbrookdale museum in Ironbridge on Saturday which I am VERY excited about! Hopefully, hope, hope, hope, we can sort out the venue and FINALLY set a date. Of course we shall also be sampling some delicious Queenie's cupcakes.

Of course the cakes and cream tea are Weight Watchers friendly! Honest!

Long time no Blog!

Wow! February really has sucked! So many dramas! Hence, so few blogs.

So, hopefully, fingers crossed, touch wood, and all that jazz we're over the worst.

Ok, so, onto the exciting business of hair accessories - I've ordered a job lot of Sinamay sheets. I've not used this material before but apparently it is the best fabric for making sturdy bases for fascinators and things. The material needs to be put into warm water and molded to the correct shape - I'm very excited to get practicing with it.

Wedding news, I think I've found a really good venue about 10 minutes drive from my mum and dad's - I took the hubster via there on our way home from South Wales on Tuesday and he seemed to like it (it was after hours so could only drive through the grounds). It's at the museum of iron at Coalbrookdale in Shropshire - www.ironbridge.org.uk/
fab old Victorian factory buildings with large windows and not too much pomp and circumstance, which almost makes me break out in hives when I think about getting married in a country house!

So, all we need to do now is measure the back garden and we can get on with organising the reception at least! yaaaay!

Hopefully 2011 is going to start picking up now...it really can't get any worse than February has been so far!

one thing after another this week...

What a terrible week it's been.

Hubster has had 2 unexpected deaths in his close family this week. I don't want to go into detail into his family's personal things so would just like to send my thoughts and love to all.

So after this news, my mum tells me my 90 year old grandmother has had a fall in the middle of the night at her nursing home and broken her thigh (I can hear you wincing from here). Drove down to Stafford to see nan on Saturday and have to admit I was expecting the worst. She has fairly advanced dementia and it's always hit or miss what kind of visit you're going to get. I was pleasantly surprised to find her awake in her hospital bed, colour in her face, and had a lovely chat with her. We decided it was probably going to have to be the end of her footballing career however. Sending lots of love to my nan.

So, Saturday we had planned to go and see Russell Howard at the M.E.N. - I had VIP tickets through work but hubster was down in South Wales with his family. I took along my friend Bex instead, who would fully admit that she doesn't understand comedy. My hopes weren't high! We arrived there and even though we were super far back, it was pretty darn cool to sit in a box with comfy chairs away from (as Bex named them) the plebs haha. Russell Howard was awesome, so funny and Bex really enjoyed it too! I was so pleased!

I've been off work for the past 2 days ill and have had numerous tests done today, which I will report back on at a later date depending on the results.

Having 2 days off work has allowed me to do some designs for some simple retro bridal fascinators which I will get supplies for tomorrow (time permitting), if not Thursday.

On a fashiony note I'd just like to point out my love for an Yves Saint Laurent blouse from the SS'11 collection, it's featured in this month's Vogue. I admit, it doesn't look anything exciting from the front but it has the most beautiful cutaway back (have a look in Vogue if you don't believe me!).

So, February has started so badly, I just hope that the family have incurred their entire bad luck quota for the year!

Fingers crossed! and here's to a better week! Love to the family.

How long is this week going to be?

Seriously, this week has lasted at least a month already!

Woke up Tuesday morning thinking it was Friday! Honestly! TUESDAY! I can understand Thursday, or even Wednesday feeling like Friday, but Tuesday?! So ever since I've felt I've been working overtime!

So, went to the wedding fayre at the Hundred House Hotel on Sunday and it was nice, the room was lovely that you get married in but I'm really not convinced we're going to be able to afford it.

It is so difficult to find different kinds of wedding venues in England due to strict laws on where and when you can get married, but it would appear even more difficult to find a nice place to just hold the ceremony with no reception. Honestly, it would seem that hotels would rather gamble on the possibility of getting a £7000 full reception booking than a definite £1000 from a couple who just want to get married!

So, we'll wait and see what comes of the Hundred House, see if we can negotiate a price! After delivering beautiful cupcakes from the Sweet Tooth Cupcakery in Chorlton (http://sweettoothcupcakery.co.uk/) my Mum and I duly sampled some wedding cakes at the fayre (naturally!).

...and we may not have a venue, I may not have a dress, but I've totally found the cake supplier! and the winner is...(drum roll please!)...Queenie's Cupcakery in Ironbridge Shropshire (providing that we get married in Shropshire!) (www.queeniescupcakery.co.uk).

I first heard about Queenies a few weeks ago when they were featured on the beautiful Rock n Roll bride wedding blog (www.rocknrollbride.com) and let me tell you, the victoria sponge that Mum and I tried was absolutely out of this world!

Last little wedding mention for this post, today I am loving a wedding story on Rock n Roll Bride which is absolutely how I want our wedding to be, featuring a couple called Jo and Olga... (http://www.rocknrollbride.com/2011/02/olga-jos-two-day-russianbritish-fusion-wedding/)

Ok ok, wedding wedding blah blah blah yaaaaaaawn.

Quick update on the weight loss (I'm sure you can guess how this is going to go judging by the overall cakey theme of this post!) I totally played truant for my weigh-in today (much cake and pizza were eaten this week and I wimped out - NOT what I would usually recommend). In my defence however I did walk 4.8 miles home today (according to google maps) to make up for it. So I really am good, honest I am...honest.

Well, that's about it for now - feels like one step forward, two back with the wedding plans at the moment so will hopefully have good news on a venue next time.

Back pain and pay day!

Plan was today to nip over to Stockport to buy supplies to make some hair accessories then go out with the hubster this evening.

Well...change of plan, woke up totally late and decided to go for lunch with Chris then nip off for supplies. After lunch something went in the muscles in my lower left back, behind my hip. This happens fairly often (a side effect they don't let you know about with weight loss), so now I'm on the sofa, dosed up with anti-inflammatories and ibuprofen gel! ho hum.

So, will head to Stockport tomorrow morning before I head off to see the mother-ship and father-ship and go to the wedding fayre at The Hundred House Hotel in Shropshire (a quite possible wedding venue).

Yesterday was pay day, hurrah hurrah and hurray! So, I treated myself to 2 little presents from Urban Outfitters...the coolest headphones ever, a pair of Spitfire R2 in white and baby pink, much love! And a suh-weeeet tee by Boy London with the GOD that is Andy Warhol on it.

(although my nan asked me why it said 'Roy' on it...wounded).

So, off for weddinggy stuff with the mother-ship tomorrow, will be nice to see the family - and hopefully get something sorted! Hubster's off to Kent for the week so I'll have plenty of time to organise!

Right, off to get ready for cocktails once the anti-inflammatories have worn off!

My own big fat wedding

Just catching up on Big Fat Gypsy Weddings on 4OD. Everyone at work has been raving about it for a week now! WOW! It's absolutely unbelievable! It's not the wedding dresses and age of the brides and grooms that is getting me, it's the kids at their communions - spray tans, sexual dancing and miniskirts at 6 years of age is troubling viewing.

No news on my own big fat wedding this week, it's been a slow one as I've been in London with work for 2 days and Chris is rushed off his feet at the moment. My mum and I are going to look at a possible wedding venue on Sunday so will update on that then.

I've been to the Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren head offices the past 2 days to view AW'11 ranges - sounds a lot more glam than it actually is (although Ralph Lauren have waiter services in their showroom which is pretty darn cool!).

Speaking of my fat wedding, I'm getting slightly closer to having a thin wedding after tonight's weigh-in (did you see what I did there? I know, smooth). 1lb loss tonight, followed by the weekly take away of course!

On a complete segue, into the world of high street fashion (to celebrate pay day on Friday - yay!), I am just loving Topshop's Swedish Summer range for early SS'11 - www.topshop.co.uk

Any who, hopefully will have some more wedding news next week, and a possible venue! Now, off to find me a light up wedding dress!

Saturday 22 January 2011

Perfect Saturday

Today has been absolutely lovely - Lie in, coffee and cake with the hubby, a trip into Chorlton and sitting in the lounge watching TV...cooked a lovely Haddock with Leek and Lemon rice for tea.

Perfection.

I'm in London for work on Monday, and, once I get paid on Friday I can finally afford to buy supplies to make some beautiful bridal hair accessories, how very exciting!

'Tensions high' this week

Right, better start where I left off - teeny, tiny, small, wee, insignificant, microscopic gain at Weight Watchers this week - 0.5lbs, it's nothing really (she tells herself). I'm back on it with a vengeance now though - it's on like Donkey Kong!

I really have let the weight loss slip since we got engaged in September, I don't weigh more than I did then, but I barely weigh less! Call me crazy but I've found looking at wedding dresses is far more fun than not eating a chocolate bar!

I'm well and truly back in to it this week and really hoping for a good loss come next Wednesday.

Now, wedding update, having put behind the dramas of last week when we realised the one place we found that we both like (Chris and I have VERY different tastes) is waaaay above and beyond our budget this week has been a bit tense. Because my mum and dad offered their back garden we've now started to look at places in Shropshire to get married - I can't help but shake the feeling Chris really wants to get married in South Wales near his family.

After much 'not saying how we're feeling and hoping the other person is psychic' Chris and I finally discussed what we both wanted - we still haven't found a venue or even decided what region we want the wedding in but at least we both have an idea now of what we want. We're continuing to look in both regions and when we find 'the one' hopefully we'll know! We both knew when we found the right engagement ring so hoping for another Eureka moment!

Anyway, I think I've found a fantastic venue near my mum and dads so fingers crossed this one will work out!

Have a great weekend everyone.

Oops! Spoke too soon!

Blimey! How things have taken a turn in the last 2 days!

Having proudly announced to all and sundry that the wedding venue was sorted, Chris and I went through the T's & C's with a fine tooth comb and found a lot of extra costs that we hadn't bargained for (gutted! and what exactly is a tooth comb anyway?)

Just as we though we were going to have to spend the best part of a years salary on 1 day my mum and dad threw a spanner (or a life jacket) in the works. Mum and Dad moved out of the family home 2 years ago, letting it out having not been able to sell in the housing slump. Anyway, they told me that they will have to move back in order to sell the house next year so, they can move back in May 2012 and we can have the wedding reception that summer at the house, one last hurrah before saying goodbye to the house that has been our family home since 1989.

I'll be honest, it's been my dream to have my wedding reception at that house ever since I watched Father of The Bride when I was little - it's just a case of finding where to have the ceremony and to pull it all in together! I challenge that I could happily take on - I just need to talk to Chris about it first.

I am now running a very real risk of becoming a blog solely dedicated to all things wedding so I will comment briefly on the Chanel Pre-Fall collection AW 11 - my brief comment is "hummana humman hummana"! image 14 makes me drool on my keyboard.

Anyway, weigh-in in 2 days, will update then.

Wedding Update! (yaaaawn)

Ok, so Chris and I go out for coffee and cake pretty much every Sunday morning (it's about the only time in the week we get to sit down and talk without distractions).

We have our own little routine, each pay alternate weeks, small soya cappuccino and dairy free banana loaf for me, large cappuccino and whatever cake takes his fancy for Chris.

This week, Chris made the mistake of saying "why don't you bring your wedding planning book with us" - ok! So, over the usual order, I wrote a list of exactly what it takes to organise a wedding - Chris was a little shocked (I swear the guy thinks he can just rock up in a suit and have it all organised for him!).

So, having looked at venues over New Year (viewings organised by me, naturally!), we have both fallen in love with a hotel in South Wales called Coed-Y-Mwstwr (or Whispering Trees for those of us from East of the bridge!) - it's perfect, I never though I'd get married in a hotel, but it's small and intimate - plus just the right size to ensure our guests will hire out all the rooms and make it in to our own private hotel for the weekend!

We've finally got the first piece of the puzzle in place, the venue is booked and our wedding will take place on September 15th 2012 (it's very odd to know that that is going to be my anniversary for years to come!). So, now all we have to do is sort the registrar, ceremony, order of service sheets, flowers, outfits, food, wine, entertainment...........

eeep.

Also, Wednesday is Weight Watchers weigh in night and weight loss this week was 3.5lbs! wooo! Having fallen off the wagon since we got engaged I'm nearly down to my lowest weight yet! Still a little way (or should that be weigh!) to go...but I'm pointing in the right direction.

knitting is my salvation!

Currently sat in a hotel in reading for work...fast realising that my 'career in fashion' is not quite where I wanted it to be at this point in my life (an admin job is an admin job whichever way up you look at it!)

Can't wait to get this business up and running! Aside from my lovely Chris, the only salvation at the moment is knitting! I took it up last year, even though I learnt when I was little...it's so relaxing, I really do recommend it to anyone who's in need of a hobby!

There are plenty of sites on the web that offer free knitting patterns, just Google it. I also recommend signing up to www.ravelry.com

New Year, New Everything!

So, 2010's come and gone and it really was a fairly pivotal year for me...having struggled with my weight since childhood I joined weightwatchers in March 2010 and, up until Christmas had lost just short of 3 stone (42lbs) - which I suspect I made a good dent in regaining over Christmas!
Then, in September 2010, September 10th to be precise, my lovely boyfriend became my lovely fiance!
So, I've kind of faltered on the weight loss since getting engaged but am going to get back on the wagon.

It's been a dream of mine for quite some time to have my own business designing, making (and hopefully selling) my own clothing and hair accessories - eventually the aim is to have my own shop but that's in the distant future!

So, 2011 - goals - plan a budget but totally rock n roll individual wedding, losing a further 20lbs to get to my goal weight and set up my online business and hopefully start selling.

Here goes! Should be fun!
